Content Editing

If you’re looking to deep-dive into your project, content editing is for you!

Also called substantive editing, content editing focuses on scenes, pages, and paragraphs to identify areas in need of refining, rewriting, cutting, or restructuring. This is an intensive edit that can analyze the effectiveness of:

• Characterization and character arcs.
• Plot holes, unresolved threads, and plot satisfaction.
• Climaxes and act structure.
• Content relevancy or necessity.
• Pacing, tension, and point of view deviations.
• Exposition and worldbuilding.
• Plausibility/suspension of disbelief.

Content editing is tailored to each individual author. If there are areas you’d like me to focus on or ignore completely, that is at your discretion. My only goal is to make your work rise to its fullest potential!

Suggested edits will be left in detailed comments directly on the manuscript along with an (optional, of course) editorial letter 5-10 pages in length. Style sheets are also available upon request.

If you want more from the experience, I offer an additional round of editing at a small fee (contact me for more details). After the first round, the author will have as long as necessary to make changes before the second and final check of the manuscript.

Line and Copy Editing

For when your manuscript is close to finished—copy and line editing is the way to go!

My copy and line editing services address the improvement of sentences and paragraphs, including accuracy, clarity, and correctness. This includes:

• Detail and description consistency.
• “Showing” vs. “telling,” cliché, and ambiguities.
• Timeline and world-building consistency.
• Dialogue and dialogue beats.
• Grammar, sentence structure/syntax, and word choice.
• Consistency in voice, style, and flow.
• Punctuation and formatting.

Changes will be made directly onto the manuscript along with detailed comments when necessary, though the author holds the right to reject any suggested edits. I typically do one round of line/copyedits, but an additional round can be added at a flat rate.

Proofreading

After polishing your work with a professional edit, I can be your proofreader!

My proofreading service focuses on double-checking rather than assessment or improvement. This includes:

• Mistakes missed during copy edits.
• Formatting, spelling, and punctuation errors.
• Clarity in phrasing and line structure.
• Inconsistencies.

Corrections will be marked directly on the manuscript, and I offer two rounds. The first will be on the original Word file, and the second will be on the finalized typeset format. This will ensure any last-minute errors are corrected prior to publication.

Please remember that proofreading should come after a professional edit and is not a substitute for a professional edit. If you think your work isn’t ready for proofreading, it may benefit from line/copyediting or content editing.
